Hongqiao Early Childhood Education
Welcome to SCIS! I have been at the ECE campus since 2012 and am looking forward to another year at SCIS working with our youngest learners and their families. For over 20 years, I have taught in the United States as well as international schools in South America, Europe, and the Middle East before moving to Shanghai. While I have had the pleasure and privilege of working in many schools at various grade levels, none have offered the unique experience of our ECE campus. In addition to my extensive classroom experience, I hold a Reading Specialist, a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and an ESL certification. I love learning and am always looking for ways to improve my understanding of child development, the ways in which children learn and the most current teaching practices. I am excited to be returning to my role as the ECE Campus Vice Principal and believe my years of education and experience will enable me to continue to support our students and faculty! When I am not working, I enjoy reading, running, cycling and practicing yoga. My weekends are spent exploring Shanghai and all this great city has to offer.

My name is Erin Babb and I first joined SCIS in 2015. I am from the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina, USA. I hold a Bachelor of Music from Mars Hill University and a Master’s in Education from Concordia University-Portland. Before SCIS, I taught in the US and then at the Anglo-American School of Moscow. There I taught music and also spent a couple of years as a Pre-Kindergarten classroom teacher. I believe that music education should be about creating, expressing and cultivating a lifelong love of music and all of its wonder! My passion and loads of energy make my classroom a very exciting and fun place for children to learn. I am a trained classical vocalist who enjoys performing and being a voice coach to children and adults who love to sing. I am in Shanghai with my wonderful husband, Bill Kern and beautiful son Liam.
My name is Josh Balli and I am thrilled to be back for another school year at SCIS! While every year is special, this one takes on an even more special meaning because this year I will be not only a teacher but a parent at the school! My son is going to be starting Nursery at the ECE and I am thrilled to see how he grows and progresses.
As for me, I am the ECE Librarian. I have a life-long love and appreciation of books and I literally can’t get enough of them. Let’s say, for example, your at the airport and have ten minutes to spare. What do you do? Well if you are me, you go straight to the book store and look at what is available! I especially have a deep appreciation for children’s literature. There is so much you can do with children’s books. Everything from life-lessons to art projects to simply having fun can be provided in a book.
When I am not reading or at work, you can usually find me playing with my son and spending time with my family. I also love spending time outdoors and around nature. Even though I have been in Shanghai for 12 years, I am still experiencing new places and outdoor parks.
Please feel free to visit the ECE library at any time! We are open from 7:30-4:30 Monday-Friday and we welcome as many visitors as possible! We hope to see you soon!

Ni hao SCIS! I am thrilled to be part of your community and cannot wait for the year ahead. Born and raised on the beautiful south shore of eastern Long Island in New York, I grew up swimming in the ocean and kayaking in the wetland canals. I played the cello for many years – I even traveled the world touring with an orchestra – and I am passionate about exploring new foods and restaurants, cooking, the outdoors, music, and immersing myself in new cultures. I received my BA in Linguistics from SUNY Stony Brook and my MA in Childhood and Special Education from Touro College. My teaching career thus far has been in New York City charter schools where I engaged with incredible children, families, and colleagues, and learned a lot about education reform and the many challenges encountered by urban schools and communities. Each school year I look forward to creating a safe and nurturing space where learning is fun and relationship building is key. I’m looking forward to a year of growth for myself and my class of Dragons!
