Hongqiao Early Childhood Education

Greetings ECE families, I am thrilled to continue leading the SCIS ECE team and appreciate its commitment to impacting students early in life. My work and travels throughout the US, Europe, and parts of the middle east have prepared me well for this far east adventure. I have been teaching and leading early childhood/elementary students for over 20 years, both in private and public schools. My formal schooling is with James Madison University where I received my Early Childhood degree and Virginia Tech where I received my Administrative degree. My commitment is to collaborate with parents and teachers to hone an incredible learning environment for our students. My professional focus of observing, connecting and interacting with students and teachers at all levels continually influences our school instructional decisions and goals. Through our new accreditation as an IB Primary Years Program (PYP) we are expanding our student’s curiosity, interest and inquiry skills. In addition, we are strategic in developing students executive functions and conceptual understanding so they are better prepared for this exciting, challenging and dynamic world. Kevin, my husband, and I have four grown children that are living and working throughout the U.S. Therefore, the two of us are enjoying the rich cultural experience and adventures available throughout China and surrounding countries. Welcome to SCIS! This will be my seventh year at the ECE campus working with our youngest learners and their families. For the last 19 years, I have taught in the US as well as international schools in South America, Europe and the Middle East before moving to Shanghai. While I have had the pleasure and privilege of working in many schools at various grade levels, none have offered the unique experience of our ECE campus. In addition to my extensive classroom experience, I hold a Reading Specialist, a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and an ESL certification. I love learning and am always looking for ways to improve my understanding of child development, the ways in which children learn and the most current teaching practices. I am excited to be returning to my role as the ECE Campus Vice Principal and believe my years of education and experience will enable me to continue to support our students and faculty! When I am not working, I enjoy reading, running, cycling and practicing yoga. My weekends are spent exploring Shanghai and all this great city has to offer. Heather Knight

My passion and loads of energy make my classroom a very exciting and fun place for children to learn. I am a trained classical vocalist who enjoys performing and being a voice coach to children and adults who love to sing. I come to SCIS with my wonderful husband, William (Bill) Kern. Erin Babb

Hello and welcome to the library! My name is Josh Balli and this is my 12th year at SCIS and the 9th working as the school Librarian/Media specialist. Every year gets better for me both personally and professionally. Last year I became a first-time dad, so not only am I busier than ever before, but I am also more sympathetic to what you as parents go through every day to raise your children. Books have always been a passion of mine. My wish is that your child feels comfortable to come to our library to both learn about what they are studying in class and to discover (if they haven’t already) just what joy books can bring. When I read and give my lessons, I try and do it with as much passion and energy as I possibly can. When I am not at work or taking care of my son, I enjoy writing, (I have self-published 3 books), cooking (I am especially fond of cooking Szechuan food) and traveling. The library is open Monday-Friday from 7:30am-4:30 PM and it is ALWAYS open for parents to check out books. Please feel free to stop by anytime! Here’s to another great school year!

Hello! My name is Julia Cory and I’m from the beautiful state of Washington. I was raised in the Pacific Northwest and then went to college in Southern California at Azusa Pacific University. I majored in Global Studies and enjoyed study aboard experiences in South Africa and Kenya where I had many opportunities to teach and work with young children. I love teaching young children because they approach learning with so much enthusiasm and curiosity. The early years are a very exciting time in the life of a child, preschoolers are learning, growing, and mastering new skills daily and I feel privileged to be apart of it. Julia Cory

Ni hao SCIS! I am thrilled to be part of your community and cannot wait for the year ahead. Born and raised on the beautiful south shore of eastern Long Island in New York, I grew up swimming in the ocean and kayaking in the wetland canals. I played the cello for many years – I even traveled the world touring with an orchestra – and I am passionate about exploring new foods and restaurants, cooking, the outdoors, music, and immersing myself in new cultures. I received my BA in Linguistics from SUNY Stony Brook and my MA in Childhood and Special Education from Touro College. My teaching career thus far has been in New York City charter schools where I engaged with incredible children, families, and colleagues, and learned a lot about education reform and the many challenges encountered by urban schools and communities. Each school year I look forward to creating a safe and nurturing space where learning is fun and relationship building is key. I’m looking forward to a year of growth for myself and my class of Dragons!

Hello! My name is Jenna Lelievre and I first joined SCIS in 2015 along with my husband, who is the High School Principal of the Hongqiao campus. I grew up in Niagara Falls, Canada and then attended George Brown College in Toronto. Soon after, my husband and I moved to Hong Kong. This adventure that started as a two-year plan, would last ten memorable years, where I taught in an International Kindergarten and had our children, who also attend SCIS.  After moving to Canada for a few years, we felt drawn back to Asia, and accepted exciting positions in Bangkok. Teaching at the Early Learning Centre—which follows a Reggio Emilia approach—gave me an insight into the ways toddlers approach and discover the newness of their world. I feel very privileged to be building on those experiences and be a part of young children’s rich beginnings at SCIS! Jenna Lelievre

My name is Lindsey Morton and I will be teaching preschool this year at SCIS. I grew up on the west coast of Canada on Vancouver Island. I love going back every summer to visit friends, family and go fishing and camping. Since leaving British Columbia I’ve had the good fortune to become an international teacher. In the past 8 years I’ve taught in international schools in Vietnam and Egypt. This is my third year teaching preschool at SCIS. My time as an international teacher has been a very formative part of my life. I’ve discovered that teaching not only involves instilling knowledge into young minds, but also being a caring and understanding person that a child can look to for support. I’ve also learned that teaching is about giving children a chance to discover the world on their own. I enjoy my role encouraging the inquiry of young minds and watching where their curiosity takes them. I have a Bachelor of Education from Simon Fraser University and am currently enrolled in a Masters of Psychology and Counselling through Yorkville University Lindsey Morton

I am thrilled to continue to be part of this amazing school community. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in early childhood education with a teaching certificate in primary education in my native Bogotá (Colombia), and a master’s degree in TESL in Vermont, USA. I lived in Canada since the winter of 2001 until my arrival to Shanghai in the summer of 2005. During that time in Quebec I taught preschool, kindergarten, and K- adult ESOL and Spanish. During my teaching years in Colombia, I taught mostly first grade, but also 4th and 5th grade science and language arts, and also high school French. Over these many years I have never stopped feeling the outmost respect and wonder for the unlimited capacity that children have to learn. I am fully committed to providing an enriched, loving environment in the classroom that allows them to discover their particular learning styles and to develop their academic and personal potential. When not in the classroom, I enjoy travelling and sharing my Latin heritage.
