The First Truly International School in Shanghai.
Shanghai Community International School was established in 1996 as one of the first international schools in Shanghai. What started out as a single campus, in the heart of the Changning district of the city, with 7 teachers and less than 50 students, has since grown to include multiple campuses and over 1,800 students.
Over 20 years ago, we recognized that Shanghai needed a truly international school – a school that focuses on developing the whole child in a supportive and nurturing environment that celebrates the spirit of a community-centered and truly internationally-minded education. SCIS was founded to serve that purpose.

“Attending SCIS starting at the young age of 3, I was fortunate to be introduced to many different cultures. Throughout the 15 years, as the school and community grew and evolved, SCIS’s internationally-diverse student body remained a constant. Learning about and celebrating different cultures together with my friends and classmates was normal. The diversity in cultures and nationalities of SCIS students has provided me with a keen sense of cultural awareness, far beyond that of the “average Joe” in today’s world”
