With the current restrictions in place, coordinators of SCIS Girl Scouts weren’t even sure if families would sign their girls up to becoming a Girl Scout! To our surprise, SCIS now counts over 50 families signed up to become a Girl Scout troop member this school year!
Girl Scout Fall Camp
In late October, we kickstarted our Girl Scout membership year by going on a camping trip!
Our fall camp took place on Sun Island, hosted at the Greenwood campsite. This was the first time that all Girl Scouts had the chance to meet one another. Upon arrival, members first gathered around for an inauguration ceremony where all recited their “Girl Scout Promise”. Newly joined girls received their brand new uniform and proudly put on their vests, officially becoming SCIS USA Girl Scouts.
During this trip volunteer parents also had the chance to enjoy themselves by meeting other Girl Scout families and giving each other camping tips, as well as tips about raising girls! Parents were all very warm-hearted, offering to help with making dinner for the whole troop and families.
During this camping trip, we were able to see strong independent girls learning new skills like setting up their tents, making survival bracelets, and playing a tactical ‘capture the flag’ game. Their courage was also tested through activities like rock climbing up a 30-meter wall and then zip lining way up high across a field.
After a nice hot dinner, the girls enjoyed a real campfire S’ mores. For some, this was their first experience toasting a marshmallow over the fire. After all, it’s not camping without s’ mores!
The Girl Scouts then sat around the campfire for a sing-a-long. Girls from the ‘Daisy’ group showed courage by grouping up and singing songs they learned from school. The ‘Brownies” group then joined in by singing popular songs that had all attendees singing along, with one member playing melodic rhythms with a steel drum. A perfect ending to a beautiful evening.
The next morning, families joined once again sharing breakfast over freshly brewed coffee. While sipping on the morning dew, campers had a fantastic view of sunlight over the grassland. The trip ended with tons of laughter and new friendships that were made along with this unique camping experience.
SCIS Girl Scouts are Stronger than Ever
Due to our Covid-19 response protocols, Girl Scouts and leaders are not able to join together and meet on school campus like we use to. Regardless, we will continue to surpass the challenges by finding different locations to host our meetings. This will give us a chance to explore our environment and try more new things!
Stay tuned to see what new challenges SCIS Girl Scouts will overcome throughout the year!
