From November 8th-10th, 2018, our Pudong campus hosted this year’s ACAMIS Volleyball Orange Division tournament, which welcomed international schools from across the region. Following an undefeated league season that earned SCIS Pudong’s first ever Shanghai International Schools Activities Conference (SISAC) East Division 1 Girls’ Volleyball Championship, our Varsity Girls had their eyes set on bringing home another gold trophy.
Over the course of three days and 48 total games, eight varsity teams representing SCIS Pudong, the International School of Ulaanbaatar, Nanjing International School, Harrow Beijing, Hong Kong Academy, the International School of Tianjin, Shekou International School, and The International School of Macao competed in the championship which was streamed lived around the world and had the attention of over 1500 viewers.
At the end of the third day, our Varsity Girls finished the tournament undefeated, winning six out of six games and claiming ACAMIS Gold for the second time in three years, while our Varsity Boys fought off a determined IST team to win Bronze!
“From the beginning” comments RiAnn Caban, assistant varsity girls volleyball coach “Coach Vic (Caban) and I knew we had a chance for a successful season, but we would have never dreamed it would have turned out like this. The first girl’s Volleyball Double for SCIS-Pudong! There are not enough words to describe how proud we are of the girls and of the season.”
Players were quick to comment as well, stating that teamwork and togetherness were key to a successful season:
“It was amazing to get to be a part of a close-knit team all over again. I’m so proud of everything we have accomplished and I could not have wished for a better way to finish my Varsity athletic career, here at SCIS. They can all attest that I cried uncontrollably at the end of the tournament out of joy and our win and sadness for the end of such an amazing experience.” – Elise Luebbe, Varsity Captain (Class of 2019)
“Starting off the season, we had a great foundation that helped us grow to a higher level throughout the season. This helped lead us to our victories and overall success as a team.” – Denali Caban, Varsity Co-Captain (Class of 2021)
“We were the same teammates returning from last year, but each of us gave their all and we finally clicked.” – Izzy Johnson (Class of 2020)
