MEET OUR PAFA Committee
– SCIS Hongqiao –
Hello everyone! This is my third year as Pafa President and my fifth on the Pafa Executive Committee. Our team is a perfect microcosm of the broader SCIS community, with members hailing from diverse backgrounds, having different skill-sets and talents so that we can complement each other as we serve the SCIS community together. I am originally from Taiwan; I grew up overseas and lived in South Korea, Southern Africa, the UK, and Hong Kong prior to Shanghai. I have two daughters: Annette (who graduated as a member of the Class of 2020 from SCIS) and Danielle (Grade 8). I worked previously as an international finance lawyer in private practice, then subsequently as an in-house corporate lawyer. In the past few years, I have been involved with different non-profits, in particular, a social enterprise that seeks to restore and empower exploited women and children in the Asia-Pacific region.
Dear all, my name is Carmen Bakas. I am pleased to join the PAFA as the Board secretary. Currently, we have twin boys in 11th grade. We moved to Shanghai in 2019 and we really enjoy living here. I am a corporate lawyer from the Netherlands, working at DaWo law firm Shanghai. I also teach once a week at the law faculty of Fudan University. Serving as a PAFA Board member will provide me the opportunity to contribute to the community while staying in touch with the school and other parents.
Our family arrived in Shanghai in August 2018. Until then, all four of us were born, raised & have lived every year of our lives in Melbourne, Australia. The ex-pat world is challenging and eye-opening, and we’ve had the most wonderful time living in, navigating & learning the language of our new city. Much of that happiness is due to SCIS and the new friendships & success of our children (Luke & Sienna) have experienced, so I look forward to contributing to the school as best I can. I’m a Chartered Accountant with over two decades of experience, having started in audit at PwC, and later in management accounting, tax & process improvement in the packaging and real estate construction industries. As Treasurer of PAFA, I am grateful to be surrounded by a fantastic team of parents with a wealth of experience in both Shanghai and all over the world. I also look forward to meeting many new people along the way.
I am Candidé Trindade, a Singaporean married to an Australian diplomat. We have two girls in SCIS, Lower School (Grade 5), and Upper School (Grade 7). We have another older daughter studying in Australia. In addition to Australia and Singapore, our family has lived in Switzerland, Beijing, and Guangzhou. Although we arrived in Shanghai in Summer 2019, with all the COVID-19 pandemic disruption, our settling in has felt very delayed. I’m looking forward to getting to know other SCIS parents and the SCIS community, as well as learning more about this fascinating city that we are living in. I am pleased to be part of the team that serves as a bridge to help busy parents understand what is going on in our school and to assist the school in reaching out to our parents.
I am excited to serve as the ECE representative to PAFA this year. My family moved to Shanghai in November 2019 as my husband is an officer at the US Consulate. My son began Pre-K at SCIS and is excited to return to Kindergarten this fall. We also have a very busy one-year-old girl at home. Previous to our move to Shanghai, I worked as a high school English teacher, teacher coach, and Media Specialist in the US. I love to support teachers and students and to work together to assist their education efforts. I enjoyed volunteering in my son’s Pre-K class and also am grateful for the role I could play in the distance learning we received. I look forward to serving as the ECE representative this year. I hope to continue the legacy of a strong bridge between ECE parents and staff.
What an awesome opportunity to be able to serve as an ECE representative this year! I am originally from Taiwan but grew up in Singapore, then spent some time in Australia… now, Shanghai has been my home for almost 10 years! I am now a mother of two children, both studying in SCIS, this is our 4th year. Besides being a mother to my kids, I am also a teacher teaching in Music Together classes, at the same time coordinating our SCIS Girl Scout Troops! I am super excited to become even more involved in this great community by joining PAFA! GO~ DRAGONS!
Greetings fellow Dragons! I am happy to join PAFA’s Board as the Lower School Representative.
Professionally, I worked in the IT industry with several Silicon Valley technology firms. I moved to Shanghai from San Francisco 15 years ago. My family and I called Shanghai as our home from home since. Having started several companies in different industries since moving here, now I am enjoying and settled on running my beauty spa business. Currently, my daughters are enrolled in 2nd and 6th grade at the Hongqiao Campus. My family and I have been part of the SCIS community for the past 3 years. Taking on this role to facilitate open communication between the school and parents is my contribution to the great school community. Eager and looking forward to working with everyone to have a wonderful 2020/2021 school year under this unprecedented global pandemic.
I come from Korea. Before settling down in Shanghai in 2004, I lived in Japan and America. I tutored middle and high school students in English until 2015. I enjoy drawing, swimming, and learning new skills. My son, Simon( Grade 5 ), joined SCIS in January 2020 and enjoyed his first semester in SCIS even under very unique circumstances. I am very excited to work with the PAFA and support this great community in the coming year.
I am excited to be serving as co- Upper School Rep Grade 6-8 together with Candice. We moved from Stockholm, Sweden, to Shanghai in July 2018. Amelie graduated from SCIS in 2020. She is off to The Netherlands for some new adventures. Eudoxie is in Grade 7. Moving around made my professional life varied, exciting, and chaotic at the same time. I enjoy walking and biking around Shanghai, learning about local history and architecture, and practicing yoga. I am looking forward to contributing to the school community to make this year a great success!
I am so very pleased to be part of the SCIS community as the Upper School Representative at Hongqiao campus. I was a Lower School and Upper School Representative in previous years. I am so very proud to be a part of the PAFA team that successfully brought strong support and connection between parents and the school. I came from Taiwan and have one daughter in grade 10 and one son, who was graduated from SCIS. This year is our 13th year with SCIS. I love spending my free time being active, exploring, learning, and traveling. I am thrilled to be a part of the SCIS community and to be an integral member that contributes with a wholehearted, caring, and genuine approach and always proud to represent our SCIS Dragons and look forward to another great school year ahead!
My family and I have been living internationally for 17 years, I am Brazilian with mixed roots. My husband, Karsten, is German and grew up in Belgium. Different cultures and languages were always present in our lives. Our son, Theo (grade 7), has been living mostly in the Middle East and Asia, always studying in IB schools. I like to play guitar, sing, read and cook. Karsten, Theo, and I love adventures and during holidays we like to go camping and enjoy nature, swim in the sea or rivers, kayak, mountain bike, and unicycle. I am a production engineer and worked with management systems, mainly environment and health & safety. As an ex-pat I had the chance to experience different activities like teaching language, practicing Thai-massage, and Tai-Chi. I want to continue developing myself and support the community around me, therefore I am now happily part of PAFA!
I am excited to serve as the PAFA representative for the 11th and 12th grades this year. Our family relocated from the United States to Shanghai in September of 2018 for my husband’s job. We have one daughter (11th grade) and this is our first overseas assignment. Before coming to Shanghai, I worked in the educational non-profit arena and was very active in our local community theatre. I currently serve as secretary for the board of Shanghai Expat Association and sing with the International Women’s Choir. In my spare time, I enjoy exploring the city (especially the fabric market), cooking and travelling.
This is my 7th year with SCIS. My two daughters, Rachel (Grade 4) and Isabelle (Grade 1) really enjoy school every day. I’m so blessed to see them grow into caring, responsible little people with warm hearts. I am very proud to be part of the wonderful PAFA team this year and looking forward to meeting you at the upcoming events!
Hello, my name is Linda Tam. My family moved from Hong Kong to Shanghai since 2001. My younger kid is now in Grade 7, and the older one graduated in 2019. Shanghai is an international city full of explorations and rapid development in lifestyles, technologies, and cultures. Just like our community in SCIS, as a member of PAFA Events Team, I found sincerity, professionalism, unity between teachers, students, and school staff in every school event. I look forward to meeting everyone and continue to contribute my best to support our community.
Hello everyone. This is my 3rd year within SCIS, I have one daughter Angel in grade six. I previously worked as a Finance Consultant, and now spend my free time doing marathon and trail running. I am excited to join the PAFA Events team, looking forward to meeting you at the upcoming events.

MEET OUR PAFA Committee
– SCIS Pudong –
Hello SCIS! My name is Vanessa Thomas. I was born in New Zealand and spent my childhood growing up there and Australia with some time spent in Asia, so this is a very familiar region for me. Prior to arriving in China, we as a family had spent a number of years in India which was an incredible experience. Each of these adventures has been a wonderful learning experience, and together as a family, we have been very fortunate to live in numerous countries all over the world.
We have been at SCIS since 2016 and I joined the Executive board last school year. It has been a wonderful way to give back to a school that has created a very warm and welcoming environment for our daughter and our family. Our daughter is now in Grade 9 and even as a teenager I love the fact that each day she loves going to school and is always full of enthusiasm.
SCIS is a community where everyone does know your name which is really important, especially as an expat family, where it’s often a very transient environment full of change. This school has created a wonderfully diverse and international environment with great open channels of communication which has made it easy to become a part of the SCIS family.
Hello SCIS families and friends. My name is Kathy Lagarto and we’ve been living in Shanghai for about thirteen years. Together with my husband and kids, Marx in Grade Five and Mikaela in Grade Ten we are so delighted to join SCIS. My kids are having a great time and enjoy attending school every day. We from the Philippines but we consider Shanghai as our second home. We are looking forward to joining exciting events at SCIS throughout the year.
Hi friends. I am Bharti Singh born and brought up in India. Moving globally for the last 9 years we came to Shanghai in 2016 with my husband Manish Singh and kids Anousha Singh, Grade 11 and Kriday Singh Grade. Since then I am associated with PAFA in various ways. Volunteering for PAFA makes me happy since I can contribute my part to the school and the community. Last year I was the communications coordinator and this year I will be taking up the treasurer role. I am looking forward to another wonderful year with SCIS 😊
My name is Maria Trantow. I came to Shanghai in 2015, together with my husband Soeren, our son Constantin (Grade Four), and daughter Mila (Grade Two). We’re from Germany but also have a Chinese family member, our dog Coffee. This is our second year at SCIS. My role on the executive board is the event coordinator. We’ve been well-received by the SCIS community last year and are pleased about our kids having the opportunity to attend SCIS. This is the reason why I like to give something back to the community and do, what I like to do, which is planning and organizing. Get the party started!
My name is Sammy YI and I was born in a small village in China. My family emigrated to Canada when I was in High School where I lived and studied for seven years. I then came back to China for work where I met my husband. I am now married with two twin children! My kids, who are now in pre-school, have been studying at SCIS since 2018, where they joined Nursery class. Since joining SCIS we have enjoyed our time so much that I felt like contributing to the community somehow and PAFA felt like the perfect opportunity to do so. In my current role as the communication coordinator, I hope to share my ideas and energy to help PAFA grow and keep doing amazing things for our wonderful community.
My name is Sandra Machan and I am from Canada and have been living in Shanghai since 2005. I currently have a senior at SCIS, my other two daughters have graduated from SCIS in 2014 and 2017. I have been involved with PAFA at some capacity since my children started in 2005. This year, my role on the executive board is PR and an advisor. I hope to make this a very special year as it will be my last year for our family’s SCIS legacy.
Hi everyone, my name is Pam Yip. I was born in Hong Kong, but I also call Taiwan and Shanghai home – we’ve been here since 2012 and in my spare time, I teach knitting to a small community in Pudong. We have daughters in grades 8 and 5, and our little boy is in pre-K; it’s our second year at SCIS and we love it here. I’m tag-teaming with Sanna Korsström as a volunteer/country coordinator. My vision is to gather more parents to get involved in helping our PAFA events, making them even more fun and memorable.
Moi! My name is Sanna Korsström and this is our second year in SCIS and Shanghai. My husband Andrei, our daughter Moira (G5) and our son Rufus (G7) have been well received by SCIS and the community. Back in Finland, I was actively involved with our school and it was very natural to continue with the same when we moved here. Our family and I have gained so much when working voluntarily and I would love to spread that feeling to the whole school. It is all about the community.
