MEET OUR PAFA Committee
– SCIS Hongqiao –
Hello everyone! This is my second year as PAFA President and my fourth on the PAFA Board. Our team is a perfect microcosm of the broader SCIS community, with members hailing from diverse backgrounds, having different skillsets and talents so that we can complement each other as we serve the SCIS community together.
I come from Taiwan and grew up and lived in South Korea, Southern Africa, the UK, and Hong Kong. I have two daughters: Annette (Grade 12) and Danielle (Grade 7), who are both passionate equestrians. This is our family’s 18th year in Shanghai. I worked previously as an international finance lawyer in private practice, then subsequently as an in-house corporate lawyer. In addition to serving the SCIS community, I am also involved with a social enterprise that seeks to rescue and restore exploited women and children in the Asia-Pacific region.
I am looking forward to another year at SCIS and being on the PAFA Board as Secretary. My family and I moved to Shanghai 13 years ago from Columbus, Ohio where I worked as a nurse in Cardiology at the Ohio State University – Go Bucks! This will be our 8th and final year at SCIS. My youngest son, Evan, is in 12th grade and will be graduating in June. My other son, Ryan, graduated from SCIS in 2018 and is in Florida attending college. I enjoy biking, walking, reading, traveling and exploring Shanghai. It will be another great year working with the PAFA team, meeting SCIS families and supporting the SCIS community.
Our family arrived in Shanghai in August 2018. Until last year, all four of us were born, raised & have lived every year of our lives in Melbourne, Australia. The expat world is challenging and eye-opening, and we’ve had the most wonderful time living in, navigating & learning the language of our new city. Much of that happiness is due to SCIS and the new friendships & success our children (Luke G7 & Sienna G6) have experienced, so I look forward to contributing to the school as best I can.
I’m a Chartered Accountant with over two decades of experience, having started in audit at PwC, and later in management accounting, tax & process improvement in the packaging and real estate construction industries.
I’m excited to join the PAFA team as Treasurer this year and am grateful to be surrounded by a fantastic team of ladies with a wealth of experience in both Shanghai and all over the world. I also look forward to meeting many new people along the way.
I am excited to serve as the PAFA representative for 11th and 12th grades this year. Our family relocated from the United States to Shanghai in September of 2018 for my husband’s job. We have one daughter (11th grade) and this is our first overseas assignment. Before coming to Shanghai, I worked in the educational non-profit arena and was very active in our local community theatre. I currently serve as secretary for the board of Shanghai Expat Association and sing with the International Women’s Choir. In my spare time, I enjoy exploring the city (especially the fabric market), cooking and travelling.
I am so very pleased to be part of the SCIS community as the Upper School Representative at Hongqiao campus. I was a Lower School and Upper School Representative in previous years. I am so very proud to be a part of the PAFA team that successfully brought strong support and connection between parents and the school.
I come from Taiwan and have one daughter in grade 9 and one son, who just graduated from SCIS. This year is our 12th year with SCIS. I love spending my free time being active, exploring, learning, and traveling. I am thrilled to be a part of the SCIS community and to be an integral member that contributes with a wholehearted, caring and genuine approach and always proud to represent our SCIS Dragons and look forward to another great school year ahead!
My family and I have been living internationally for 17 years, I am Brazilian with mixed roots. My husband, Karsten, is German and grew up in Belgium. Different cultures and languages were always present in our lives. Our son, Theo (grade 7), has been living mostly in the Middle East and Asia, always studying in IB schools. I like to play guitar, sing, read and cook. Karsten, Theo and I love adventures and during holidays we like to go camping and enjoy nature, swim in the sea or rivers, kayak, mountain bike, and unicycle. I am a production engineer and worked with management systems, mainly environment and health & safety. As an expat I had the chance to experience different activities like teaching language, practicing Thai-massage and Tai-Chi. I want to continue developing myself and support the community around me, therefore I am now happily part of PAFA!
My name is Carolyne Pang, I am happy to serve as the Lower School Rep. this year. This is my 20th year in Shanghai, my 9th year in SCIS and my 3rd year in PAFA. I have two children, one in Grade 9, Isabel and a younger one in Grade 5, Markus.
I was born in Hong Kong, grew up in England and Canada. My children were born and grew up here in Shanghai. Having moved from one country to another when young, I am glad my children have a root here in Shanghai.
I majored in Psychology and have an MBA in Finance. I worked in an educational institution under my family business in Beijing before residing in Shanghai. I love working but I am glad I have the option to be fully involved and engaged in my children’s life, enjoy their growing up and witness them becoming responsible and independent individuals.
Hi, I am originally from Korea and serving the PAFA board as a Lower School Representative this year. This will be our family’s fourth year in SCIS. My daughter Na Hyeon, who’s going to be a 3rd grader is enjoying every single moment at the school. Previously I worked as a merchandiser at Gap Inc for 9 years. Now as a trailing spouse, I find myself spending a lot more family time. Shanghai is our family’s first living abroad destination. All of us are enjoying the diversity that this enormous city and SCIS have to offer.
I’m excited to be in my third year as the PAFA representative for the ECE campus. I have two children at SCIS, Nora is in Kindergarten and Juliette is in grade 1. This is their fourth year here, and we couldn’t be happier with the school, staff, teachers, and community. I was born and raised in Oklahoma, USA. However, we moved to Shanghai from the Netherlands, where my husband is from and my children were born. Our family loves traveling to new places, trying new foods and learning about different cultures.
I was born in Belgium, originally from a Chinese family but 100% European in my heart! We moved from the Netherlands with my beloved husband and our 2 boys (Matty – Ethan) They are trilingual (French/English/Chinese) and love their school very much (Hongqiao & ECE Campuses)
In the past years, I worked in an American company as a process improvement/project manager where I collaborated with many nationalities. I’m very happy to have the same opportunity in Shanghai either within the school or the expat community. This is my second year as PAFA rep for ECE and I’m very happy to help again this year. Our team is expanding this year with an event team and I truly believe our group will do great things for the youngest ones in ECE this year again.
This is my 6th year with SCIS. My two daughters, Rachel (Grade 4) and Isabelle (Grade 1) enjoy school every day. I’m so blessed to see them grow into caring, responsible little people with warm hearts. I am very proud to be part of the wonderful PAFA team this year and looking forward to meeting you at the upcoming events!
I was born and grew up in the Northeast of China and spent the last college/university year in Australia. I worked in the Accounting field for many years in Canada and the US. My son, Maxwell, has been enjoying his school days with SCIS since we came to Shanghai about two years ago. He is excited about moving up to 1st grade next. I am honored to join the amazing PAFA Events Team and look forward to working with our dedicated and highly talented members to continually bring joyful, diversified, and unforgettable events to the SCIS community.
This is my 8th year in SCIS Hongqiao Campus. We have two boys: one has just graduated from SCIS, and the other one is in Grade 6. When my husband and I hear our kids’ laughter every time, our hearts will melt just like swimming in a pool of honey. We came from Hong Kong and have been in Shanghai for nearly 18 years. My character is willing to help, but not to bother anyone as possible as I can.
Being a new member of the SCIS PAFA Event Team this year is a great challenge for me. Not only through support from my husband, but also my friends who have been together in the community of SCIS for 6 years encouraged me to join. SCIS has a friendly and energetic community which we can witness every day. Therefore, I will try my best and sincerity to cooperate with PAFA in making a harmonious atmosphere for everyone.
My name is Michelle McDonald. Originally from Southern California, I moved to Shanghai from Sydney, Australia last year. I lived in Australia for 8 years and was a homemaker, looking after my two boys now in grade 1 and grade 3. The SCIS community was so welcoming last year that the move overseas was an easy transition for my family. We are enjoying exploring Shanghai and learning about Chinese culture. I look forward to serving the SCIS community on the Events Team this year!
MEET OUR PAFA Committee
– SCIS Pudong –
Hello SCIS! My name is Vanessa Thomas. I was born in New Zealand and spent my childhood growing up there and Australia with some time spent in Asia, so this is a very familiar region for me. Prior to arriving in China, we as a family had spent a number of years in India which was an incredible experience. Each of these adventures has been a wonderful learning experience, and together as a family, we have been very fortunate to live in numerous countries all over the world.
We have been at SCIS since 2016 and I joined the Executive board last school year. It has been a wonderful way to give back to a school that has created a very warm and welcoming environment for our daughter and our family. Our daughter is now in Grade 9 and even as a teenager I love the fact that each day she loves going to school and is always full of enthusiasm.
SCIS is a community where everyone does know your name which is really important, especially as an expat family, where it’s often a very transient environment full of change. This school has created a wonderfully diverse and international environment with great open channels of communication which has made it easy to become a part of the SCIS family.
Hello SCIS families and friends. My name is Kathy Lagarto and we’ve been living in Shanghai for about thirteen years. Together with my husband and kids, Marx in Grade Five and Mikaela in Grade Ten we are so delighted to join SCIS. My kids are having a great time and enjoy attending school every day. We from the Philippines but we consider Shanghai as our second home. We are looking forward to joining exciting events at SCIS throughout the year.
Hi friends. I am Bharti Singh born and brought up in India. Moving globally for the last 9 years we came to Shanghai in 2016 with my husband Manish Singh and kids Anousha Singh, Grade 11 and Kriday Singh Grade. Since then I am associated with PAFA in various ways. Volunteering for PAFA makes me happy since I can contribute my part to the school and the community. Last year I was the communications coordinator and this year I will be taking up the treasurer role. I am looking forward to another wonderful year with SCIS 😊
My name is Maria Trantow. I came to Shanghai in 2015, together with my husband Soeren, our son Constantin (Grade Four), and daughter Mila (Grade Two). We’re from Germany but also have a Chinese family member, our dog Coffee. This is our second year at SCIS. My role on the executive board is the event coordinator. We’ve been well-received by the SCIS community last year and are pleased about our kids having the opportunity to attend SCIS. This is the reason why I like to give something back to the community and do, what I like to do, which is planning and organizing. Get the party started!
My name is Sammy YI and I was born in a small village in China. My family emigrated to Canada when I was in High School where I lived and studied for seven years. I then came back to China for work where I met my husband. I am now married with two twin children! My kids, who are now in pre-school, have been studying at SCIS since 2018, where they joined Nursery class. Since joining SCIS we have enjoyed our time so much that I felt like contributing to the community somehow and PAFA felt like the perfect opportunity to do so. In my current role as the communication coordinator, I hope to share my ideas and energy to help PAFA grow and keep doing amazing things for our wonderful community.
My name is Sandra Machan and I am from Canada and have been living in Shanghai since 2005. I currently have a senior at SCIS, my other two daughters have graduated from SCIS in 2014 and 2017. I have been involved with PAFA at some capacity since my children started in 2005. This year, my role on the executive board is PR and an advisor. I hope to make this a very special year as it will be my last year for our family’s SCIS legacy.
Hi everyone, my name is Pam Yip. I was born in Hong Kong, but I also call Taiwan and Shanghai home – we’ve been here since 2012 and in my spare time, I teach knitting to a small community in Pudong. We have daughters in grades 8 and 5, and our little boy is in pre-K; it’s our second year at SCIS and we love it here. I’m tag-teaming with Sanna Korsström as a volunteer/country coordinator. My vision is to gather more parents to get involved in helping our PAFA events, making them even more fun and memorable.
Moi! My name is Sanna Korsström and this is our second year in SCIS and Shanghai. My husband Andrei, our daughter Moira (G5) and our son Rufus (G7) have been well received by SCIS and the community. Back in Finland, I was actively involved with our school and it was very natural to continue with the same when we moved here. Our family and I have gained so much when working voluntarily and I would love to spread that feeling to the whole school. It is all about the community.
