    Hello all! I am thrilled to be a member of the SCIS community. I hail from Minneapolis and earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Elementary Education at the University of Minnesota. I have previously taught and worked with kids in grades PK-5, in varying roles. I love helping kids find their passions and connect with the world around them, through discovery and working together. My own passions include traveling with my husband, reading mystery novels, being outside, and doing anything crafty. I look forward to working with all of the families and staff here at SCIS.

    Howdy, allow me to introduce myself! Originally from Great State of Texas, I attended Baylor University in Waco, graduating with a degree in Health Science Studies while contributing to multiple publications within the Health, Human Performance and Recreation research lab. This is my second year at SCIS after having taught Math at both the Middle and High School level, in addition to instructing primary and secondary Physical and Health Education. Prior to SCIS I was in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I enjoy eating, athletics, photography, exercising, and coaching, as I have grown up competing in multiple sports even up to now. I was very fortunate to have such great teachers and mentors throughout every level of my education. I look forward to reciprocating those memorable and everlasting efforts every year towards the students that walk into my classroom while doing my absolute best to provide every student with the best experience they deserve both inside and outside of the classroom.

    Bonjour! My name is Monia Voegelin and I am a High School French teacher. I received a M A. in Psychology from the University of Aix-en-Provence and later obtained a teaching certificate for French as a foreign language from the Alliance Française of Paris. In 2013, I started my teaching career in Mumbai,India. I love languages and I keep on learning them to travel the world as much as I can. I am excited to be in Shanghai and I am looking forward to meet my new students at SCIS!

    I am honored to lead the Upper School at SCIS Pudong. In my 16 years as an educator working in U.S. public schools and international schools in China, I have focused on school leadership, language acquisition, curriculum development, and student support services. I was drawn to SCIS because of its commitment to the International Baccalaureate Programs. I feel strongly that these programs best serve international school students. I completed my Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at the University of New Mexico in the United States. I am particularly interested in the science of learning. In addition, I hold master’s degree in in Special Education and School Counseling, and a certification in Educational Administration. As an undergraduate I earned my bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Political Science at Saint Michael’s College. When not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family. My wife, Emily Williams (Librarian) and my daughters Cadence and Aria are here with me at SCIS. In the summer we split our time in the U.S. between my home state of Vermont and my adopted home of New Mexico. In my free time, I enjoy playing and coaching basketball, studying Chinese, traveling, and being active outdoors.

    All great travel comes with great stories, so it's good that I love both. I joined SCIS in 2014, having previously taught in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Tokyo, Japan, and Los Angeles. I'm a teacher for MYP Media, DP Film, and Theory of Knowledge as well as the advisor for upper school Student Council. I enjoy cinema and art, although if you ask me for my favorites, the answer will probably be different every time as there are so many from which to choose. I look forward every year to watch the brilliant young artists emerging from SCIS!

    Hello, my name is Mathew Walsh (please call me Mat) and I'm from a small town called Port Hope just outside of Toronto, Canada. I have a BBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University. I am also pursuing a Masters of Teaching Degree with the University of Southern California. I spent the early part of my career in a variety of traditional business sectors before moving in to education as the Human Resources Manager at an International School in Macau. I am excited to be the new School-Community Relations Officer in Pudong and I look forward to working closely with the PAFA and the whole SCIS Community. I love hockey, basketball, baseball and above all else, music. My wife Aleksa is the newest Pre-K teacher here at SCIS Pudong and together we are excited to explore all that Shanghai has to offer in these areas and beyond.

    Hello, my name is Wang Rui (Christina). I am from Xuzhou that is in northern Jiang Su province. I graduated from Jiang Nan University in Wuxi with a Bachelor's Degree in English. I am currently doing my M.A. Degree as Master of Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language in East China Normal University. I have been teaching in SCIS for 5 years and I love being here with my lovely students and colleagues.     Hello! My name is Vivian Wang. I’m from Nanjing China. I graduated from Nanjing Normal University. I have worked over seven years in Shanghai United International School as a homeroom teacher teaching language, math and the Unit of Inquiry. During these years, I attended many workshops required by IB both domestic and overseas. During my teaching career, I also took the course of teaching Mandarin to speakers of other countries and was certified of TCSOL and TCFL qualifications accredited by Office of Chinese Language Council International(Han ban). The other two years teaching experience is in Fushan Foreign Language School as Theme of Inquiry teacher, supporting to build up the curriculum. I have joined in SCIS since 2013. In this school year, I will continue to teach in Lower School Mandarin department. I enjoy working here and am proud of our school-SCIS. I love young children in SCIS who are smart, creative and dynamic. I am looking forward to another fabulous school year.

    My name is Austin Wellman and I come to you from the rolling farm fields of southeastern Minnesota, USA. I grew up on the corner of my grandparents’ farm as the second of five children, surrounded by cousins, aunts, uncles, and all sorts of extended family. I graduated from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities with a Bachelor of Arts in communication studies and a minor in music on the trombone. Marching band, concert bands, jazz and choral ensembles occupied much of my time through school and still are a passion of mine today. After college, I began work toward my teaching license at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota while simultaneously working full time at Lionsgate Academy in Crystal, Minnesota as a special education assistant. Upon completion of my certification, I moved to Kuwait to work at the American International School Kuwait as a 2nd grade teacher, where I fell in love with the international lifestyle. In December 2015, I graduated with a Master of Arts in Teaching from Hamline University. My masters capstone research gathered a collection of teachers’ music backgrounds and investigated how music involvement might impact teaching and the school community. I began my teaching adventure at SCIS Hongqiao in the fall of 2015 and have loved teaching 4th grade with my dynamic dream team ever since. I invite you to join in on my tradition of wearing a bow tie on what I call "Top Tier Tuesdays" and also invite you to play your trombone on “Trombone Fridays."

I am an lower Mandarin teacher of Pk-G5 at Pudong Campus of SCIS.I majored in Teaching Chinese as the second language for two years and I was selected to be a mandarin teacher in New Zealand for one year. I am an experienced teacher and have a good understanding of Chinese culture and language. I enjoy teaching and look forward to supporting students to achieve goals.     I am very excited to be returning to Shanghai and back at SCIS. When I arrived in Shanghai in 1999, SCIS had about 100 students and 20 teachers. After 5 years at SCIS I taught in Germany, Australia and Thailand. I return with my husband Alastair, son Kit and Thai dog, Indi. This year I will be teaching both MYP and DP Visual Arts. As a practicing artist and teacher, I can’t wait to explore the contemporary art scene in this fine city. Shanghai has always felt like my second home, so it is both invigorating and familiar returning here. I look forward to seeing old friends, students and parents, as well as meeting new ones!

    Hello! I am so excited to be teaching at SCIS! Prior to teaching here, I worked in South Korea and Uganda. I studied Fine Art with a focus in Photography and Painting, receiving my BFA from Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus, Ohio. After competing my degree, I worked as a professional photographer for a few years before returning to school to prepare to become an art educator. I love my job, it is so rewarding to see my students develop their technical abilities while furthering their creativity. Outside of school I have really enjoyed being a part of various Theatre companies in different technical roles and playing music. I also love to travel at any opportunity. I am especially looking forward to exploring and learning about China!

    My name is Ricky Whitfield and I am teaching Grade 3 this year at the Hongqiao Campus. This is my first year at SCIS. I am from sunny Sydney, Australia. I am in my 12th year of teaching and most recently came from teaching in Hanoi, Vietnam. Having also taught in Europe, the Middle East and other parts of Asia. I graduated from the University of Western Sydney with a Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) and then received my Bachelor of Teaching (Primary Education). I’m passionate about learning and right now I am trying to speak Mandarin! I spend my free time looking for vintage records and in book stores. I love pizza and spinach but not at the same time! A good weekend to me looks like Swing dancing Friday followed by a late-night pizza of course. If I can swim, run, work out, play tennis or squash or go on an epic bike ride then I’ve had a great weekend.

    Hello SCIS community! I am from Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. I am passionate about helping students learn how to find and use information and resources so they can thrive as lifelong learners. I received a B.A. from Brown University in Business Economics and an M.B.A and a J.D. from the University of New Mexico. In my experience as an educator, lawyer, and financial officer I have developed a love for identifying, analyzing and applying new information. I am motivated to help students develop these skills and communicate their learning. I previously taught IB Business, IB Spanish, IB English B and ESOL in Beijing and then taught IB History, Economics, and Government in New Mexico. When I’m not reading, I love learning languages and participating in performing arts. I play guitar and sing, I dance, and I enjoy being behind the scenes in the theater. I am delighted to be a part of the SCIS community!

    My name is Sean Winchester and I'm extremely excited to be teaching music at SCIS this year. I've lived all over Canada throughout my childhood and ultimately earned my B.A. in Music at the University of Toronto and my B.Ed at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. My wife and I both began our careers teaching music in Saudi Arabia and haven't been able to stop travelling since! I am a pianist and a vocalist and love working with students and my community to collaborate as much as possible in many varieties of musical endeavours, particularly music theatre. I'm looking forward to meeting and working with all of the new and returning staff and students at SCIS this year!

My hobbies include paining, baking, photography and traveling around the world. I have taught Mandarin abroad before, and now I am teaching Mandarin in the upper school at SCIS. This is my second year in SCIS, and I am so excited to be a part of this big family!

    Greetings SCIS Community! My name is Dalyce Yanisiew and I am thrilled to be a part of the Kindergarten team again this year. My most recent previous experience includes teaching in the Kindergarten division at an international IB school in Dubai, UAE. At that school, I gained a wealth of knowledge about PYP and inquiry-based learning. Before Dubai, I was living and teaching in my home country of Canada where I was lucky enough to remain at the same elementary school near Toronto for seven years. At this school, I taught a variety of ages and specialties including Kindergarten, Grade 4, Health & Physical Education and Core French. One of my passions is fitness so you will often find me participating in or coaching a variety of fitness activities both in and out of the classroom. In addition, I love to travel and explore new places. I look forward to continuing to explore all that Shanghai and China has to offer this year!

    My name is Christie Young Smith and I teach Fifth Grade at SCIS. I was born and raised in Colorado, USA but have travelled my entire life and feel at home abroad. I received my Bachelor’s degree at Johns Hopkins University and my Masters of Education at Stanford University. Prior to moving to Shanghai, I lived in the States and in Hong Kong working as a teacher and museum educator. I love to engage students in art, inquiry, and thinking about big ideas. My favorite part of teaching at SCIS is learning with such a diverse group of students. SCIS is a truly “International” international school!

    My name is Sophie Zeng. I am excited to be returning for the 5th year at SCIS as the mandarin Coordinator at ECE campus. I was born and grew up in Shanghai. I have taught both Mandarin and English as a foreign language to children from Pre-kindergarten to G12 (IB DP) and adults in China. In the coming school year, I will continue to teach the students at ECE. I love teaching the IB program, and I am also an PYP mandarin teacher and IB DP examiner. I love our SCIS community and continue to take our shared mission to heart by working together to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring learners who contribute positively to their communities.

    My name is Linda Zhang and I am a Mandarin teacher at the SCIS Pudong campus. I've been teaching for almost 25 years, and have experience at local and international schools. I love education and appreciate the opportunity to meet so many wonderful children, and work in such a great environment. I enjoy watching a child grow from I can't do this" to "I can", from "I don't know" to "I want to learn". And along with the students, I am growing too.
