Beginning a new school year is an exciting time for both children and parents. So much is changing as you are getting to know new teachers, new environments, and new routines. However, this can also be quite a stressful period as the relaxed summer vibe is quickly replaced by anxiety for what’s to come. Here are five back-to-school tips to help ease you and your child back into a school routine that is sure to make the transition easier and stress-free.

1. Get back in the routine.

Think of a routine that works best for everyone in your household, and ease into it. Work with your child to re-establish routines and make sure everyone knows what to expect. Dedicate homework time, mealtime, and morning routines that work best for everyone involved.

2. Develop a relationship with your child’s teacher(s).

Getting involved in your child’s education is important. Take the time to meet your child’s teachers at the beginning of the school year. Teachers are a great source of information and developing a relationship early on in the year will benefit both you and your child tremendously.

3. Talk to your kids.

Communication is a must-have, especially with the hustle and bustle of a new school year. Ask your children how they are feeling about the new year, what they’re looking forward to and what they are not so much looking forward to. Before bed or at dinner time make it a habit to talk things out and make sure everyone is on the same page.

4. Get organized.

Everyone benefits from being organized. Use a planner and make sure you and your children’s schedules are aligned. Regularly check the school calendars (SCIS Hongqiao Calendar & SCIS Pudong Calendar) to ensure you don’t miss out on important upcoming events.

5. Sleep early!

Gone are the summer days of rolling around in bed and waking up way past the sunrise. By implementing earlier bedtimes, it will be easier for everyone to wake up early enough to eat a healthy breakfast and get reading for the school bus to arrive. Remember that getting 7-9 hours is the target amount of sleep your child should get to be the most productive at school.

By following these tips, you will help inspire a love of learning as you transition back into the new school year and ensure a stress-free start for you and your child.
