It reflects our mission by encouraging learners of all ages to actively contribute to their communities. Pathways for students, parents & families, and the wider community include curricular integration, school-provided experiences, and off-campus opportunities. Being mindful of both our intent and our impact is important. Ongoing reflection by everyone involved helps us learn and grow.

Community Mapping

Historic Shanghai & SCIS

Connect 连接 (lián jiē) , Contribute 贡献 (gòng xiàn) , Question

The Historic Shanghai Community Walks are a signature example of community-engaged, place-based learning at SCIS. Rooted in a partnership with Historic Shanghai, these experiences invite students, families, and educators to explore the city not just as observers, but as curious participants and contributors.

Across PYP, MYP, and DP, students connect curriculum to real places and lived stories - asking questions about identity, belief, culture, systems, and belonging. Learners co-design elements of the experience, apply disciplinary skills, and engage in dialogue with community experts who bring depth, nuance, and historical perspective.

Rather than treating the city as a backdrop, these walks position Shanghai as a living classroom - one that encourages noticing, listening, and reflection. Through shared inquiry and reciprocal partnership, the walks help make learning visible while strengthening relationships between school, community, and place.
